One of the major obstacles to keeping physically fit in our 30s and beyond is making the time for exercise. Even though clinical research has its challenges, it simply does not contain the same urgency and difficulty as clinical work on the wards. No incessant pages; there is always time for lunch and coffee; and no dreaded night shifts. However, for those who have ever moved within walking distance to a hospital can tell you, it just makes you more lazy and you end up being late to work anyway!
I’m probably speaking for myself as most of my readers will be type A personalities but the easier my life becomes, whether that’s in career knowledge or financially, the more lazy I become. For example, after returning from my covid redeployment in Sept 2020 I couldn’t summon the will to do a single locum shift for the ensuing 9 months despite my disappointing research salary because I was too comfortable.
I believe it’s really important to create some ongoing resistance in whatever form we can and therefore enter the home treadmill that I recently bought. I think it’s temporarily out of stock but it’s actually relatively cheap for a treadmill going for only £450 when I bought it last month. You won’t get quite the gym experience for that stellar price but from a former gym rat it comes pretty close, I would say it’s 80% there. The only drawback of this treadmill is the runway width which is slightly shorter than the premium gym ones but you do get used to it after a while. The length of the treadmill, the modes and buttons are all there, the latter two of which there’s so many I don’t even use!
The treadmill itself weighs about 75kg and it’s very sturdy even though I weigh around 90kg. The major unspoken advantages of having a treadmill at home is two-fold.
Firstly, excuses will be no more when you walk past the treadmill every day. Especially during weekends, nothing stops you from waking up, running for 20 minutes before your morning shower and going about your day. During weekdays, you can run two days after work and with minimal effort you’ve already worked out 4 times a week! No wasting an hour or fuel traveling to and from the gym, not to mention the motivation required to prepare and get there in the first place.
Secondly, some people like and prefer to run outside which of course is absolutely fine. However, in Dundee, Glasgow and a lot of the UK, it rains, snows and fills with ice a significant proportion of days in the year. We also shouldn’t underestimate the effects of cold air and bronchoconstriction. Even with the elements aside, the main issue is setting a level of difficulty for yourself.
Returning to the point of being lazy, I succumb to tiredness and wouldn’t be able to sustain the same pace and incline without the threat of a treadmill throwing me onto the floor looming over me constantly. When I’m tired on a treadmill I have no choice but to continue the same pace and incline, whereas I’m 100% certain that even if I were able to give myself a good incline outside to run against, I would quickly tire and slow my pace.
For those two very good reasons I choose to run using my home treadmill. I like to make things a little more difficult each time I get on e.g. first time was incline 5 speed 5 then speed 5.1 speed 5.2 etc with each subsequent session. The incline can be increased and the duration of our workout can be adjusted from 20 mins to 20 mins 30 secs etc.
The important thing to bear in mind is that it’s all about the marginal gains, or the incremental effect of small improvements.
