Maximising Your ST3 and ST4 Application Score: Teaching
Following on from my last post about how to maximise your application score with regards to the publications section for ST3 and ST4 posts, this post will entail the teaching section and explain how to grab the low hanging fruit.
The teaching section currently consists of two separate sections. The first table denotes whether or not you’ve created a teaching programme and obtained the necessary feedback. In my humble opinion the maximum number of points (6) should be obtainable quite easily in this section.
In the notes from the ST3 recruitment website (https://www.st3recruitment.org.uk/recruitment-process/applying/application-scoring) it states that you’re required to work with local tutors to organise a teaching programme and arrange teachers, but it’s not necessary for you to have personally designed the teaching programme. The teaching programme does however require you to teach regularly over a period of at least 3 months and have obtained formal feedback and completed a reflection, probably on eportfolio.
I would argue that over a 3 month period consisting of 12 once-a-week sessions, teaching medical students or foundation doctors once a month would count as regular. In summary, to achieve the maximum 6 points, perhaps you should follow these steps:
1) Find like-minded people who also want to maximise their teaching score and everyone will have ticked the “arrange teachers” box – win win.
2) As a group, maybe approach a consultant with a teaching interest and explain the process and pre-emptively ask for a “developing the clinical teacher” form
3) Teach 3 sessions over 3 months with your other group members doing the rest
4) Request your developing the clinical teacher form and complete a reflection on eportfolio
The second section is slightly trickier in the sense the points require some time. Another way to look at it is that the above can net you potentially 6 points with minimal effort whilst a masters in teaching only nets you 4 points.
A straightforward 2-day teaching course that is done everywhere can net you 1 point and I’d recommend that as that’s what I did at the time. Unless you’re very keen on teaching, a qualification in teaching isn’t mandatory – most medical schools will jump at the opportunity for us to teach medical students (free of charge) regardless of whether we have a teaching degree or not.
